Travelers Through a Hundred Ages
ART BASE MOMOSHIMA presents a special exhibition and series of discussions in which artists and scholars across disciplines revisit the relation between the individual and society from the perspective of artistic expression. Momoshima is a remote island floating on the serene Setouchi Inland Sea, and remains divorced from the rapid changes the nation is undergoing in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. By turning, instead, towards the relationship between art, local communities and the individual, we seek a path to a prosperous society and envision our future to come.
The title of this program, “Travelers Through a Hundred Ages” refers to a prose piece written by Li Bai, a prominent Chinese poet of the Tang Dynasty, entitled “Preface for a Spring Evening Banquet with Cousins in a Peach Blossom Garden.” Connecting past, present and future, it situates the modern individual as a wanderer in today’ s oversaturated mediascape, in search of new horizons. It is our hope that the program offers a compass with which to navigate us through this fraught environment.
